A studio in your pocket

This is a look back on A Spy Story, one of the Boundless Projects.

“The definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple.” ― Albert Einstein

To my eyes, Apple’s Clips app is genius. The act of creating engaging and high quality video used to require a small team of experts using expensive hardware and software. While phones and devices like GoPro have made it easier and more affordable to capture video, editing and producing has remained complex. I’m not sure why this application isn’t more widely known or used yet, but it’s likely just a matter of time.

When creating A Spy Story, I used my iPhone to capture some highlights of the experience. I didn’t put a lot of effort into it. Just had the phone ready when something was happening and tried to capture some of the game elements so we wouldn’t forget them.

Fortuitously, as Rosey’s party was approaching, Apple launched a new app for IOS called Clips. On my way to work that day, I tried tried it. The video below was created during my commute… my first time using the app. It’s that easy and that powerful.

The “trailer” associated with A Spy Story was created entirely on the iPhone using clips.

Note that the music, video effects, comic filter, and title graphics all work together to create a thematic experience.
